OPTA chairman mr. Fonteijn elected chair of BEREC for 2011

Brussels, January 28th 2010. Today Chris Fonteijn, chairman of the commission of OPTA, the Dutch Independent Post and Telecommunications Authority, was elected Chair of BEREC, the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications, for 2011.

BEREC was recently established by regulation of the European Parliament and Council. This body of independent EU national regulators will play an important role regarding European regulation and policy. BEREC is the next step in the present cooperation between European regulators in the European Regulators Group (ERG).

Fonteijn has been board member of the ERG since 2008. Until January 1st 2011 Chris Fonteijn will act as vice-Chair of the BEREC, after which he will succeed John Doherty of Irish regulator COMREG as the Chair of BEREC. Fonteijn will combine his work for BEREC with his chairmanship at OPTA.
