Consumers play an important role in ensuring that the communications markets operate effectively. It is easier for them to opt for service and quality, if they are aware of their rights and are able to enforce them if necessary. OPTA provides information about telecommunications and post through ConsuWijzer. In addition, information provided by NMa and the Consumer Authority may also be found there. These organisations work together with OPTA to maintain this information portal.

Enforcing your rights

How does ConsuWijzer help consumers? Although ConsuWijzer does not solve individual problems, it does point visitors in the right direction. The website contains tips to help people take action themselves: information folders containing information about their rights and examples of letters to enable them to file a complaint with a business promptly. If they have any questions, consumers can also approach professional assistance by telephone, e-mail and ordinary mail.
ConsuWijzer covers the following matters:

  • the internet, telephony, cable and post;
  • energy;
  • electronics and household appliances;
  • home and garden;
  • holiday and leisure;
  • clothing and textiles.

Complaints

The ConsuWijzer website is very important to OPTA. A regulator requires feedback from the market, if it is to be fully aware of where problems are being experienced and where enforcement is required. It is for this reason that visitors to the website are constantly asked to submit any complaints they may have. OPTA may launch an investigation, if it receives enough pointers to difficulties in the market or contraventions of the law. Where necessary, it will then intervene to improve the situation for consumers.
Reports submitted through ConsuWijzer have already prompted the regulators to take action on numerous occasions. It is virtually impossible for this not to happen, if you receive tens of thousands of reports every year. As soon as any ruling becomes public knowledge, it is published on the ConsuWijzer website.
